I kind of sneakily dropped this work in at the very beginning of 2017. It was something I very briefly sketched out, and it took me even less time to complete.
I was thinking about this German word waldeinsamkeit, which is basically untranslatable to english, but it comes out to be defined as “the feeling you get when alone in the woods”. I imagine this feeling as being a few things. The word waldeinsamkeit is supposed to mean as in your deep connection to nature, but I gleaned a few other meanings to it. How do you feel when you’re alone in the woods? Do you get scared? Does it depend on the time of the day, or your situation, what’s going through your head? When you’re alone in the woods, are you ever truly alone?
I also had recently watched Ridley Scott’s “Morgan” (as well as the new “Pete’s Dragon”, go figure) and there were some decidedly beautiful forest scenes at the end. This was definitely the kind of forest that my characters would be in; tall, mature pines, space to move around, and eventually, a massive waterfront, as well as mountains, to make for an ultra moody presence. I took screen shots of some of the most poignant scenes and posted them on my Tumblr for myself and others to reference.
Clearly my characters spend a lot of time in the woods, and I’ve taken a particular liking to this color scheme as of late. You can see it in other works such as Hunted and Wounded. But, if you know me, you know I really love doing blasts of lighting and going crazy moody with it, such as in Our Names in Lights or Remembering. This work didn’t take me long to make, as I was thinking of a less-is-more approach, but it’s effective in its lighting, simplicity, and use of texture, in my opinion.
