Siren, 2018, In Progress Pics – MerMay!

A pale pinkish wet slick-looking male fish creature sits half in and half out of dark, murky water. The fish-man is looking up to the viewer with all black eyes as if he is helpless or needs help. He appears to be loosely covered in seaweed, but looks to have a long body and tail though much of it is hidden under the dark water, attempting to lure the viewer to assist him.

Most of the time, I am too busy (or too lazy, really your preferable choice of words here!) to participate in a lot of the artist “events” that happen over social media. The past couple of years I’ve been trying to take more of an active interest in trending artist topics as a way of showcasing my artwork to new people. The past few years I’ve done inktober and made at least one picture for MerMay. I also participated in #ArtvsArtist the past couple of times it came around. Look at me go!

Dear Apple, I think I want a divorce

Dear Apple,

It’s been a while. Quite a bit of time, actually. Maybe really close to 31 years, actually. We’ve been together through a lot of things. That awkward stage where all of your hardware was beige (hey, it was the thing to do in the 90s!), through all of your Mac OS iterations. I was with you, as passed down through my family, at risk of sounding like a total hipster, before you were really popular. I was a fan of yours, going in to Circuit City and other hardware/software stores looking for the four titles that were available on Mac… Breakout, Super Breakout, Photoshop… I even attended a MacWorld Expo years back with a friend I was slowly converting into Machood. Remember when… Remember OS 9? Haha, I think it’s funny to think newer Mac fans probably don’t even know that Mac OS X is literally called that because it is the 10th iteration of your OS, and Mac OS 9 was VASTLY different. Remember when you adopted Mac OS X? And the availability of applications for Mac was so limited and valuable that for years we could run an emulator (called “classic”) to run OS 9 applications until eventually the catalogue was good enough again you could remove it? Remember VersionTracker (Now MacUpdate) as being the go-to source to get apps before the invention of the iTunes store? Remember all the old startup chimes? Remember the rainbow colored Apple logo? Remember TinkerTool? Remember Aspyr Media (the only one that was actually trying to port games to work on Mac)? Remember ClarisWorks/AppleWorks, now Pages?

It’s no secret that I am a feet-hater. Unlike many other artists who choose not to confront hands and cleverly attempt to hide them, I actually love drawing hands. I had really taken to Cam de Leon’s style of bony, almost alienesque looking hands when I was a teenager, and I spent a lot of time as a teen trying to draw hands looking similar. In doing such I actually managed to train myself to not be terrified of hands I guess! There’s something really delicate and nice about hands, and because of that I like to draw them and usually make them pretty detailed.

Slender Man: Two Images No One Knows I Made

There’s a movie based on viral internet spooky horror phenomenon Slender Man coming out soon (August 24th, to be exact). For those of you who don’t know, Slender Man was a simple concept created via photomanipulation for an internet comedy forum (yes, I’m part of that forum and I was there to witness the legendary birth) by user Victor Surge (Eric Knudsen). It’s classified as “creepypasta” (Creepypasta derives from the term copypasta, which is a take on “copy-paste”, but that’s a discussion for another time), and was originally created in response to a Photoshop thread where people were making ordinary photos into creepy ones. There, Slender Man was born. From out of that came the Marble Hornets story, along with tons and tons of fanart and fan pieces which developed the story of Slender Man and what he might have been. Leucism, In Progress Pics and Timelapse, 2018

This new work I made rather quickly. I had seen a few gorgeous pictures of some albino folks online. I often look at the albino color palette of skin, given my character Azra (and his counterpart Falco) are both leucistic, meaning they suffer from partial loss of pigmentation, mostly in their skin. Anyway, I like drawing bugs a lot, and I often see a flutter of bright white moths around my front porch light, so I got to thinking about the contrast of white on white and then black.
