Leucism, In Progress Pics and Timelapse, 2018

April 2, 2018

This new work I made rather quickly. I had seen a few gorgeous pictures of some albino folks online. I often look at the albino color palette of skin, given my character Azra (and his counterpart Falco) are both leucistic, meaning they suffer from partial loss of pigmentation, mostly in their skin. Anyway, I like drawing bugs a lot, and I often see a flutter of bright white moths around my front porch light, so I got to thinking about the contrast of white on white and then black.

The original idea was I was going to translate the digital work onto canvas, and then paint the black with Black 2.0, making it really pop against the white. Since Black 2.0 is also matte, the rest of the picture would be glossy. I used this idea recently in a painting of a black hole.

When I started the picture, I was going to make all the moths white, but ended up trying to bring some darkness and black around the piece by bringing it into the moths and butterflies as well. Ultimately, I decided against putting the piece on canvas, but I think it still works just fine the way it is!

I also started a timelapse video, so you can see about an hour’s worth of work from the beginning of the work. I didn’t get to turn on the recording software after, unfortunately, so there are some obvious changes in shape, placement, and shading, plus the addition of butterflies and moths. But… the shorter amount of time allowed me to make a longer timelapse so someone who wants to see it could make out how I did it (and my process for this particular painting) a little better!
