Sparx Corporation Logo & Fav Icon Design, 2018

January 3, 2018
Sparx Corporation Logo and Fav Icon, 2018

This is really less of a 2018 project as it was more of a 2017. It had some very interesting roots, too.

To start, my brother some time ago asked me to design him a logo for Sparx Corp, something he wanted to start. I made him something basic based on no input from him, just something random. I sent it to him, it kind of fell off, and then we both sort of forgot about it.

Sparx Corp Initial Design

Cue when he was asking me design questions about his cloud server. I saw that he had gotten a logo design, but it was something he had purchased on Fiverr. The “designer” that created it literally ripped off Space X’s logo. My brother thought the design was great, but wasn’t aware of Space X’s logo and the glaring similarities to his own. Sometimes this happens, especially if a company isn’t pasting its logo around the world like Coca-Cola. It was when I pointed this out to him that he came back to me and my design.

Sparx Logo Second Round

I dropped in the colors he currently had and changed some things around to make it more like what he had with the Space X logo, getting a similar feel but not ripping it off. He wasn’t a fan of my retro drawn font(s), so we went through a few other fonts and ideas to find our way.

Ultimately, we ended up with something like this:

Sparx Corp Jersey Swoop

I liked the idea of the swoop conveying that sort of spark movement. He was not entirely sold.

Sparx Swoop Design

This was my favorite iteration of the design by far. I loved the swoop and the way it cut through. I also really loved the way it photographed with backlight — the grey turned to white and the red turned to orange, but he didn’t like the swoop or the color scheme. Sometimes you can’t sell clients on your vision, and sometimes they just don’t see the “flow” of things that you have set forth. But that’s OK, we came to a less exciting conclusion, sans “x swoop”:
